Frequently Asked Questions
Have lots of questions about how medication management works and how it could impact your life? We’re here to guide you in making this decision! Check out our FAQs below.
What if I already see a therapist?
That is great! Whether you see a therapist at Ellie or elsewhere, you can still benefit from our medication management services! We take referrals and work closely with other Minnesota therapy clinics to provide you with top-notch psychiatry that gets you closer to your mental health goals.
Do I need to see a psychiatrist to get mental health medication?
Not all mental health professionals have the qualifications to prescribe medication. The prescriber needs to be physician (which includes psychiatrists), a physician assistant, or a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Every member of our team at Ellie has specialization in psychiatry and we work together so that you can always get the best care.
Do I need to be worried about side effects of mental health medication?
While mental health medications can be an effective treatment for many people, they can also cause side effects. This is why medication management is a vital aspect of your psychiatric care as your integrated mental health care team can monitor any side effects and make adjustments as needed. It’s important to remember that everyone reacts differently to medications. If you notice any severe changes, call your provider right away.
Can mental health medications cure mental health conditions?
The effectiveness of mental health medication depends on many factors. While some people might see significant improvement with medication alone, others need a combination of medication and therapy to see the best results. Some people might find that other treatments, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy, are the most effective. Your medication management team will continue to evaluate your treatment plan and can make adjustments if certain medications, dosages, or treatments aren’t getting you the results you want.
Can I stop taking mental health medications once my symptoms improve?
It is always recommended that you do not stop taking mental health medication without the guidance and supervision of your psychiatry team. This can lead to new or worsening symptoms or withdrawal. Your doctor can help you navigate if you should continue taking medication and guide you in slowly and carefully tapering off your medication.
Does Ellie offer medication for children and teens?
Yes! Medication can also be beneficial for children and teens who are struggling with common conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism, and more. We know that it can be difficult for parents to navigate this decision and are here to guide you on choosing the best option for your child’s needs.
