Hi, I’m Dr. Destinie Dobson—a compassionate, culturally attuned therapist who believes that every person, couple, and family deserves to be understood, not judged. Life is complicated. Relationships are messy. And sometimes the weight of anxiety, trauma, or disconnection can make it feel impossible to move forward. That’s where therapy comes in—not as a quick fix, but as a space for real, lasting transformation.
I work with individuals, couples, and families who are navigating life transitions, trauma, or emotional challenges that feel overwhelming. Whether you’re managing anxiety or depression, healing from loss, working through a difficult relationship, or simply trying to find yourself again, I’m here to help you build the clarity and confidence to move toward healing and connection.
Growing up in a military family taught me that resilience is born from empathy and adaptability. I understand the unique pressures that come with service life—constant change, separation, reintegration, and the unspoken emotional weight that can linger beneath it all. This background shaped my passion for supporting military members, veterans, and their families, as well as Indigenous and BIPOC communities, who often face additional barriers to mental health care. My research on empathy and resilience in military populations continues to guide my approach to therapy today.
I specialize in helping clients address:
Anxiety, Depression, and Mood Disorders – Find your footing when life feels unstable and learn to manage emotions with self-compassion and awareness.
Trauma and PTSD – Heal from the past and reconnect with your sense of safety and identity through trauma-informed, evidence-based care.
Relationship & Family Conflict – Rebuild trust, improve communication, and strengthen connection through collaborative, system-focused work.
ADHD, Autism & Neurodiversity – Learn to work with your brain, not against it. I offer neurodiversity-affirming care to support executive functioning, communication, and emotional regulation.
Addiction & Codependency – Explore the roots of addiction patterns with compassion, and develop sustainable recovery through accountability and support.
Grief, Loss, and Life Transitions – Navigate change, loss, or uncertainty with grace, and rediscover your inner strength.
Women’s Issues & Identity Development – Empowering women through transitions, self-esteem growth, motherhood, or relationship changes.
Domestic Abuse & Healing from Violence – A safe, supportive space to process trauma and rebuild a sense of control and worth.
My approach is grounded in trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy, blending a variety of modalities to meet you where you are. I draw from:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help reframe thought patterns that fuel anxiety and depression.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to restore closeness and trust in relationships.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore and integrate different parts of yourself with compassion.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) to reduce stress and build presence.
Narrative and Solution-Focused Therapy to help you re-author your story and move toward your goals.
Family Systems Therapy (FST) to understand and heal the patterns that shape family dynamics.
In our sessions, you can expect honesty, humor, and genuine connection. I’ll challenge you when needed and celebrate your progress every step of the way. My goal is to make therapy a safe, creative, and collaborative experience—one where you feel seen, supported, and empowered to create the change you want.
For children and families, I create engaging, developmentally appropriate sessions that might include art, play, or experiential techniques to deepen understanding and promote growth. For couples, we’ll work to rebuild trust and communication while rediscovering the joy in your relationship. For individuals, we’ll focus on healing, clarity, and practical strategies that help you thrive in your daily life.
As a therapist, I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. You bring your story, culture, and lived experience into the room—and that shapes our work together. I honor and celebrate that. Whether we’re exploring gender identity, navigating cultural expectations, or rebuilding after trauma, my approach is rooted in cultural humility, inclusivity, and respect.
Therapy with me isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. It’s about learning to hold space for your own emotions, building tools to manage stress, and reconnecting with the parts of yourself that got lost along the way. You don’t need to have it all figured out before starting therapy; you just need a willingness to begin.
At Ellie Mental Health in West Bloomfield, we believe therapy should feel like a conversation, not a lecture. We use humor, honesty, and heart to make the process approachable and real. You’ll find a space that’s comfortable, judgment-free, and built around your unique needs.
