About Jose Torres
Jose Torres is licensed by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council as a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2018. Jose earned his Master’s of Education in Counseling degree in 2017 and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2008 from the University of Houston. Jose has extensive experience working with adolescents and adults that experience severe mental illnesses and demonstrate risk of harm behaviors to include psychosis, cutting, suicidal ideation, and homicidal ideation. Jose has experience working with at risk youth residing in low-income areas where he implemented a school-based curriculum for two years. Jose worked for twelve years at the local mental health authority of Harris County, seven years in private practice, and is now the Clinic Director.
In his practice Jose’s counseling approach is based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Narrative Therapy where the goal is to replace unfavorable core beliefs and narratives with supportive ones. Jose listens to the narrative’s individuals say about themselves and challenges those patterns of thinking with beliefs that are adaptive and conducive to someone’s life. Jose’s approach is one that focuses on retelling the stories we share about ourselves and challenges those beliefs to construct new ones that improve the way we view ourselves, others, and our environment. Jose uses cognitive restructuring, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and behavior activation to help clients align their behaviors with their values. Jose also received training in working with individuals that suffer from risk of harm behaviors, depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, schizoaffective, post-traumatic stress disorders, and veterans with trauma symptoms.
