Maria is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works with many skills-based therapy systems, including mindfulness techniques focused on learning to be more present. She utilizes a trauma-informed approach grounded in “bottom-up” theories such as grounding, breathing, and somatic awareness. Maria also incorporates CBT, DBT, and ACT, all of which offer practical tools to help intercept maladaptive habits and manage distressing symptoms with skills clients can readily practice and implement. She finds that many people appreciate having a consistent, weekly space to vent or engage in talk therapy around current or ongoing stressors. This may include life transitions, caretaking, parenting, LBTQIA+ families, single parenting, divorce, break-ups, insomnia/sleep concerns, interpersonal conflict, grief/loss, women’s experiences, and in managing stress, anxiety, or depression.
Maria believes therapy can also serve as a space for shorter-term problem solving, especially during periods when life feels difficult to manage or balance. She offers an open and approachable environment designed to foster supportive care and room to breathe. She understands that beginning therapy can feel daunting, particularly for those who have never had access to therapy or are taking the plunge for the first time. Maria believes in meeting people where they are, taking time to understand who they are and what makes up their world in order to create a safe and welcoming space to explore patterns, habits, and symptom relief.
She works with individuals facing overwhelm related to balancing life and work, anxiety, ongoing medical intervention, and the strain of navigating interpersonal relationships. Sometimes this work involves reconnecting with personal strengths or identifying them for the first time. Other times it may involve gaining language for emotional experiences, receiving feedback, or reevaluating personal values. Maria’s work is centered on helping clients navigate questions, challenges, and difficulties in a space that ultimately feels empowering.
Maria believes in a collaborative, person-centered approach that offers a judgment-free zone. Through the use of Expressive Arts, sessions may also incorporate more non-traditional methods utilizing creativity and the arts. This allows for flexible thinking and new ways of sitting with, moving through, or letting go of unwanted feelings while cultivating what clients need to move toward healing and growth.
