Mariela Romero

Therapist

Mariela Romero is an LPC Resident under the supervision of Heather Nickerson LPC, NCC, CCTP, CET with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Old Dominion University. She has extensive experience providing mental health care in hospital and primary care settings, having completed her clinical training at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare.

As a bilingual clinician, Mariela is dedicated to increasing access to culturally responsive mental health services for Spanish-speaking individuals and the Latine community. She has worked with diverse populations, including individuals navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, chronic illness, and life transitions. She has also supported patients under suicide precautions, conducted risk assessments, developed safety plans, and provided psychoeducation on postpartum depression and anxiety to new mothers.

Mariela utilizes an integrative therapeutic approach, drawing from Relational-Cultural Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). She is passionate about creating a collaborative, nonjudgmental space where clients feel empowered to explore their challenges, build resilience, and develop strategies for meaningful change.

In addition to her clinical work, Mariela has facilitated growth groups for graduate students focused on peer support, stress management, and work-life balance. She is committed to ongoing professional development and is working toward EMDR certification to further support clients experiencing trauma.
