Wondering if IOP could be right for you?

IOP is an effective treatment option for individuals with moderate to severe mental health issues. If you have questions about our IOP programs, please contact Kayla Lindeman, Specialty Clinic Director at (651) 313-8080 option 4. Our experienced IOP team is here to support you in making informed decisions about your treatment.

What is IOP?

Intensive outpatient programming (IOP) is a structured form of mental health treatment that provides a higher level of care than traditional outpatient therapy. It is designed to meet the needs of individuals who need more support and guidance than regular outpatient therapy, but who do not require residential or inpatient treatment.

IOP involves Group Therapy, Individual Therapy, and Medication Management that meets multiple times throughout the week.

Group Therapy

IOP group therapy sessions are led by a licensed therapist. The group provides a supportive and therapeutic environment where participants can share experiences, learn from each other, and develop coping skills.

Individual Therapy

In addition to group sessions, participants have one-on-one sessions with their primary IOP therapist to receive personalized therapy and develop a treatment plan.

Medication Management

IOP also includes regular check-ins by the primary IOP Provider to monitor medication effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments.

Adult IOP programs

Ellie is here to help you make the best choice for your mental health.

Psychosis Track

This track is targeted for young adults experiencing an episode or symptoms of psychosis. This track utilizes key concepts from the NAVIGATE program, NAMI, OnTrackNY, and other evidence-based treatment modalities for recovery after experiencing psychosis symptoms. This program focuses on the reduction in symptoms, healthy lifestyle choices, and stress management. The goal is to help clients work toward achieving their individual goals, improvement in overall functioning and return to work or school.

This track meets 4 days a week for 3 hours per day for 9 weeks and is offered both virtually and in person at the Maple Grove Clinic.

Depression Track

Ellie Adult Depression IOP is an intensive outpatient program for adults experiencing symptoms of depression. This program utilizes evidence-based treatment modalities including CBT, DBT, ACT, behavioral activation, and focuses on learning new coping skills and receiving support from others. This program provides intensive support but also encourages clients continuing to be engaged in “real life” activities such as school, work, and spending time with family and friends. The goal is to help clients fast track to getting back to the life and activities that they love.

This program meets 4 days per week from 9:00 am-12:00 pm (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) and takes 8 weeks to complete. In addition, clients participate in weekly individual therapy sessions and medication management sessions. This program is located at the Woodbury Ellie Mental Health Specialty Clinic located at 625 Bielenberg Drive, Suite 104, Woodbury, MN, 55125.

DBT Track

Adult Adapted Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) IOP is an intensive outpatient program for adults experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, addictive behaviors, relational distress, difficulty regulating emotions and other challenges. This unique program utilizes Marsha Linehan’s evidence-based treatment modalities of DBT and focuses on learning new coping skills to find a balance between the seemingly opposite strategies of acceptance and change while receiving support from others. This program provides intensive support but also encourages clients continuing to be engaged in “real life” activities such as school, work, and spending time with family and friends. The goal is to help clients fast track to getting back to the life and activities that they love.

This program meets virtually 3 days per week for approximately 12 weeks from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday). In addition, clients participate in weekly individual therapy sessions and medication management sessions as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about how IOP works and how it could impact your life? We’re here to guide you in making this decision! Check out our FAQs below.

How long is IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)?

IOP is a group-based program 3-5 days per week, usually lasting 9-12 weeks, depending on your individual needs and treatment plan.  Times of the different IOP programs vary but are either held in the morning (9-noon) or in the afternoon (1-4).

What is IOP?

IOP is like “boot camp” for therapy, it’s an intensive level of outpatient group-based therapy providing a multi-disciplinary treatment approach which may include a psychiatrist, licensed therapist, and a mental health counselor/social worker who work with you to individualize a treatment plan based on your symptoms. The services are provided for 3 hours a day, 3-5 days per week (depending on the program). Group therapy with your peers involves traditional talk therapy, and skills and psychoeducation groups to learn new ways to approach your mental health needs. There is weekly or bi-weekly individual counseling, and family therapy or psychiatric medication management may also occur.

How much does IOP cost? Does insurance cover IOP?

We accept all major commercial health insurance plans of BC/BS, Health Partners, Cigna, UCare, Preferred One, Tricare, America’s PPO, and Optum.

Is IOP worth it?

Intensive Outpatient Programs are helpful in many ways.  They provide tremendous support in a safe environment to help manage and treat mental health symptoms without going to the hospital. IOP’s can serve as a step-down for individuals coming out of the hospital or residential treatment or can serve as a step-up from 1-2 days a week outpatient care when that isn’t quite meeting your needs.   IOP provides structure and support for a longer period of time than hospitalization.  This allows you to learn and practice skills daily.  Longer treatment, with live practice in this way, has been shown to be more effective in preventing the return of symptoms.

How do I know if IOP is right for me?

If you are experiencing moderate to severe symptoms and are having difficulties functioning in one or more of these areas: work, school, your social life/relationships, home, or self-care, IOP could be the right level of care for you.   If you are unsure if IOP is right for you, you can always schedule an intake to understand it in more detail.

Do I need to be referred to an IOP?

No. While many individuals come to one of our IOPs through a referral from another provider, it is not a requirement to be admitted to an IOP. We have an initial assessment process (it’s really just a conversation!) in which we will work with you to determine whether IOP is right for you.
