Ellie Mental Health is a therapist owned and operated startup based in the Twin Cities of Minnesota with the intent to disrupt and transform the culture around mental health. Led by a team of creative, innovative, energized, and effective change-makers, Ellie Mental Health is on a mission to do things different—and in doing so, do things better. As we’ve quickly become the nation’s fastest growing mental health company with franchised locations opening in communities across the country, we are expanding our mission beyond the clinical realm and setting our sights on disrupting the world of academia and current methods of training professional therapists. The UNIVERSITY at Ellie will offer a Master of Arts Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy with specialization tracks in Complex Family Systems, Macrosystemic Assessment and Social Change, and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies. As we develop this new degree-issuing University, we will do so by maintaining Ellie’s core values of Creativity, Authenticity, Humor, Compassion, Acceptance, and Determination.
The UNIVERSITY at Ellie
The essence of Marriage and Family Therapy’s development as a distinct profession and method of clinical practice never took place within the constraints of a traditional University system. In fact, the pioneers of MFT founded the profession in direct opposition to publicly-funded institutions hyper focused on psychoanalysis and the traditions of our Western medical model. Differentiating from these institutions allowed our pioneers to be disinhibited in their creative capacities that brought to life the many daring, courageous, and systemically-strategic models of intervention that earned relational therapies a prominent position in the competitive world of behavioral healthcare. The essence of systemic therapies merged scientific teachings with creative ingenuity to manifest a more humanized, artistic method of change. This was largely made possible by early family therapy education and training actualizing outside of constrained, massive institutions with internally competitive needs and political agendas. Instead, they took place in training clinics embedded within the communities they served. The UNIVERSITY at Ellie aims to resurrect the historic essence of family therapy training while leveraging 21st century technologies/teachings that have proven effective in drastically increasing access to receiving a quality graduate school education.
The UNIVERSITY at Ellie has a singular focus and mission: To generate a premiere family therapy training experience that merges the best of the old with contemporary technologies through a nimble, innovative system liberated from the constraints inherent to larger institutions. No inter-departmental politics. No top-heavy administrators prioritizing their own career ambitions over program and faculty needs. And freedom to engineer an innovative educational/training experience in ways that reflect what we know will work rather than advancing the agenda of stakeholders and trustees. The UNIVERSITY at Ellie will be housed within Ellie Mental Health’s national headquarters in St. Paul, MN, allowing for direct access to Ellie’s largest, thriving community clinic and diverse team of expert therapists/supervisors.
